To USB or Not to USB

DisplayLink Announces HP USB 3.0 Docking Station Design Win

HP has started shipping a USB 3.0 port replicator (docking station) at a price point of $149 based on the DisplayLink USB 3.0 to HDMI/DVI video chip.

DisplayLink adds HP to it’s list of customers which includes  HP and Lenovo USB 3.0 port replicator / docking station products and 2 Targus products.

(You can see demos of the Targus docking station from DisplayLink and Synopsys below).

It isn’t clear to me if HP is completely replacing their PCIe docking stations with USB 3.0.  The USB 3.0 version is clearly the most economical long term solution for IT departments.  The same docking station could be used for at least 2 generations of PCs or more.  Plus, the docking station should be usable with other brands of PCs since the USB 3.0 drivers should be standard.

You can see a diagram of the HP3005pr from the HP Website below. The DisplayLink chip sits behind the HDMI and DVI receptacles.

You can read how I think USB 3.0 Docking Stations can be used with not just laptops and ultrabooks but also tablets and smart pones in this blog entry.

After the jump, you have the option of watching up to 6 videos with DisplayLink chips

By the way DisplayLink is our customer. So I’ve embedded previous videos with them below.

DisplayLink explains how USB 3.0

3) DisplayLink explains how Adaptive Compression maintains video quality over USB 3.0

At times, the USB 3.0 bus could possibly become saturated with USB traffic.  For example, if you were simultaneously transferring files to a USB 3.0 external drive.  In this case, DisplayLink’s adaptive compressionw will compress the video so you can continue to use your video screens during the short time of your fast USB 3.0 data transfer to your external drive.

DisplayLink explains how Adaptive Compression ensures a high quality image when USB 3.0 traffic is high

Food Poisoning

I had food poisoning last weekend, all weekend.  I think I got it from a free donut on Friday.

This is sad as I think I will not want to eat another donut ever again.

What is the probability of that I will not eat another donut?

a) 5%

b) 50%

c) 80%

d) 100% until I’m offered a chocolate covered, custard filled donut
