On this episode, we had the pleasure of talking to Dr. Peter Ateshian, who drove all the way up from Monterey, California to join us in the studio for this technically-intriguing yet approachable program.

Generally speaking, the semiconductor industry’s most advanced node today is 22 nanometers (as named by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors – ITRS). Peter discusses the amazing technology below 22 nanometers being developed at the Naval Postgraduate School and other research institutions. Such advanced technology includes complementary carbon nanotube transistors and diamond-silicon based gallium nitride transistors. Hear Peter tell us about these and other future innovations on the horizon.

On this episode of Conversation Central, Karen gets the chance to catch up with an old friend and colleague, Roy Jewell, former president and COO of Magma Design Automation.  Yvette and Karen ask Roy to share his career story of how he went from a Physics major, to engineer , and then to business leader and what it took to become successful along the way.

Roy Jewell’s first job out of college was with Texas Instruments, where he and Karen met. Roy attributes part of his success to the culture that he was surrounded with at TI which instilled the importance of being in control and solely responsible for one’s career path. With a physics background, Roy made the transition from a highly technical position to a marketing role at a start-up in Palo Alto, California. He then went on to become a business leader in various C-level roles.

Roy also shares with us where he thinks the EDA industry is headed, the changes that need to happen, as well as what he looks forward to personally. Karen also tells a story of her favorite memory of Roy.

Over the years at the EDA Interoperability Forum, we have asked many industry luminaries to come share their thoughts on the challenges and opportunities in the chip design and EDA communities. These luminaries laid out their predictions for the future and discussed how important interoperability is for the ecosystem.

At the 24thInteroperability Forum, we invited  several of the past keynote speaker “alumni” to come back and revisit what their concerns were when they last spoke at the Forum.  They also discussed where the industry is now and shared their visions on how future challenges can be overcome and how to make the most of the opportunities ahead.

Listen to this episode of Conversation Central to hear the summaries of what these luminaries spoke about.

The full  recordings and the PDFs of the presentations will soon be available on the 24th EDA Interoperability Forum home page.

Embedded Design: Managing the Complexity

Posted by Hannah Watanabe on 15th September 2011

We were very excited to welcome Kumaran Santhanam into our studio for this episode of Conversation Central to talk about embedded design. Over ten years ago, Kumaran was an embedded systems consultant who designed systems for clients all the way from the low level to higher level types of software. During his time as a consultant, he saw a consistent lack of available tools for embedded engineers to help them complete their projects more quickly and efficiently. He saw this as an opportunity to start a company that developed these types of tools, and Total Phase was founded.

Now ten years since he founded Total Phase, Kumaran shared with us what he believes embedded engineers are looking for and what their biggest challenges are. He shares how embedded design has changed over the years and how all of the complexity has made embedded engineers think differently about their designs.

Kumaran also touched on USB 3.0, how IP plays a role in managing complexity, and what is done to try to improve communication between software and hardware engineers.

Lastly, Kumaran lists the trends in embedded design, what he sees happening as we move forward, and gives advice to embedded engineers on how to deal with the complexity of these trends.

This episode of Conversation Central features a summer rerun of The New Publishing Paradigm, an interesting discussion between John Donovan and John Reardon about print verses online media. This show aired at DAC 2010, but this topic still remains extremely relevant in 2011.  A shift is occurring in the way individuals choose to consume information, and this shift is a contemporary issue that both companies and the media cannot ignore. John Donovan and John Reardon discuss why more and more content is being moved from print to online, but also why people still like print. Learn about the pros and cons of both online media and print and how to find credibility in both.

This episode includes new commentary from your hosts, Karen as Yvette, as they reflect on the relevance of this topic a year after the original air date.
